Major Food Assistance Programs

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) — The largest food assistance program. Monthly benefits loaded onto an EBT card, usable at most grocery stores. Average benefit: $6/person/day. Eligibility: income ≤130% FPL (about $39,000 for a family of 4).

WIC (Women, Infants & Children) — Nutrition support for pregnant women, new mothers, and children under 5. Covers specific healthy foods plus formula and breastfeeding support. Eligibility: income ≤185% FPL.

National School Lunch / Breakfast Program — Free or reduced-price meals for K-12 students. Families earning ≤130% FPL get free meals; 130–185% get reduced-price meals.

TEFAP (Emergency Food) — USDA commodities distributed through food banks and pantries. No income requirement — walk in and receive food.

Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program — Vouchers for low-income seniors to purchase fresh produce at farmers markets.

  • 1 person: up to $1,580/month gross income
  • 2 people: up to $2,137/month
  • 3 people: up to $2,694/month
  • 4 people: up to $3,250/month
  • Each additional person: add $557/month
