Adult Education & Family Literacy Act (AEFLA) Programs

Funds free adult basic education, GED/HiSET preparation, English language learning (ESL), and transition-to-college programs nationwide. For adults without a high school diploma or who need to improve foundational skills.

Eligibility requirements

  • Adult 16 or older who is not enrolled in secondary school
  • No high school diploma or equivalency, OR English language learner, OR needs basic skills improvement
  • US resident

These classes are federally funded and free. Find your nearest program through your state's adult education office or by calling 2-1-1. Classes are offered at community colleges, libraries, and community centers — many offer evening and weekend sessions for working adults. Some programs also offer childcare during class.
