Public Housing Program

Administered by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) · hud.gov

HUD-funded housing units managed by local Public Housing Agencies (PHAs). Rent is capped at 30% of adjusted monthly income for eligible low-income households.

Eligibility requirements

  • Income at or below 80% of Area Median Income (AMI)
  • US citizen or eligible immigrant
  • Pass criminal background check
  • Family, elderly, or disabled household
Insider tip

Apply to your local PHA even if the waitlist is long — your position is set by application date. Many PHAs have preference points for elderly, disabled, or currently homeless applicants that move you up the list.
