TANF Transportation / Diversion Assistance

Administered by State TANF agencies (federal TANF block grant) · acf.gov

Many states allow TANF funds to be used for emergency car repair or transportation costs when the vehicle is needed to get or keep a job. Often called 'diversion assistance' — a one-time payment to resolve a crisis without requiring ongoing TANF enrollment.

Eligibility requirements

  • Low income — generally below 200% FPL
  • Vehicle is required for employment or job search
  • State residency and other TANF requirements apply
  • Varies significantly by state
Insider tip

Ask your caseworker specifically about 'TANF diversion' or 'one-time TANF payment for car repair' — this is different from ongoing cash assistance and doesn't start a TANF clock. States like Washington allow up to $2,000 for vehicle repair. This is one of the most underused TANF provisions.
