Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR)

Administered by USDA Food and Nutrition Service · fns.usda.gov

Provides monthly USDA commodity food packages to low-income American Indian and Alaska Native households on or near reservations. An alternative to SNAP — eligible households choose one or the other.

Eligibility requirements

  • American Indian or Alaska Native living on or near a reservation or tribal trust land
  • Income at or below federal poverty guidelines
  • Cannot simultaneously receive SNAP
Insider tip

Many tribal members prefer FDPIR over SNAP because distribution happens locally through tribal agencies, reducing travel. The food package includes culturally relevant items in some regions. Contact your tribe's food program office to compare what you'd receive vs. SNAP.
