Medicaid Home Health & Personal Care Services

Administered by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services · medicare.gov

Medicaid covers in-home skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and personal care aides for qualifying patients recovering from stroke, surgery, or serious illness at home.

Eligibility requirements

  • Medicaid eligible
  • Medical need for in-home services
  • Doctor's order for home health
  • Unable to easily leave home (homebound)
Insider tip

Medicaid home health has no copays and covers more hours than Medicare. For stroke recovery, insist on a comprehensive needs assessment — many patients receive far less home care than they're entitled to. A patient advocate or social worker can help maximize covered services.
