Medicare Home Health — Post-Hospital Recovery

Administered by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services · medicare.gov

Medicare covers unlimited skilled nursing visits and therapy at home after a hospital stay if you're homebound and need skilled care. Stroke and cardiac patients frequently qualify for months of covered home therapy.

Eligibility requirements

  • Medicare beneficiary
  • Homebound (leaving home requires considerable effort)
  • Need for skilled nursing or therapy
  • Doctor certifies home health plan
Insider tip

Medicare home health has no limit on visits and is 100% covered with zero copay. Insist on it at hospital discharge — many patients are sent home without being told they qualify. Call 1-800-MEDICARE if a home health agency or hospital says you don't qualify.
