Medicare Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) Rehab

Administered by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services · medicare.gov

Medicare covers inpatient rehabilitation at a skilled nursing facility after a qualifying hospital stay. Stroke and cardiac patients often need weeks of intensive inpatient rehab covered at 100% for the first 20 days.

Eligibility requirements

  • Medicare beneficiary
  • 3+ night qualifying hospital stay
  • Need skilled nursing or rehab services daily
  • Admitted within 30 days of hospital discharge
Insider tip

Demand the '3-night rule' be met before accepting SNF placement — if you were admitted as 'observation status' instead of inpatient, you may not qualify. Ask the hospital explicitly: 'Am I admitted as an inpatient?' This matters enormously for SNF coverage.
