Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Administered by Social Security Administration (SSA) · ssa.gov

Monthly cash payments for elderly (65+), blind, or disabled adults and children with very limited income and resources. Not tied to work history — you don't need to have worked to qualify.

Eligibility requirements

  • Age 65+ OR blind OR disabled (meets SSA definition)
  • Income and resources below SSA thresholds (assets under $2,000 individual / $3,000 couple)
  • US citizen or qualified immigrant
  • Reside in the US
Insider tip

SSI is separate from Social Security disability (SSDI) and does not require a work history. SSI recipients automatically qualify for Medicaid in most states and may qualify for SNAP with reduced verification. Apply even if you think you won't qualify — the disability definition is complex and many people succeed on appeals.
