Texas Medicaid

Administered by Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) · yourtexasbenefits.com

Free or low cost health coverage for Texans who fall into specific eligibility categories. Texas did not expand Medicaid under the ACA, so adults age 19 to 64 without dependent children generally do not qualify regardless of income unless they are disabled, elderly, or pregnant. The parent income limit is one of the lowest in the country at roughly $230 per month for a family of four. Children, pregnant women, seniors, and people with disabilities have higher and more accessible thresholds.

Eligibility requirements

  • Texas resident, US citizen or qualifying immigrant, must fit a covered category. Income limits vary sharply by group: parents capped near 12% to 18% FPL, children under age 1 up to 198% FPL, children ages 1 to 5 up to 144% FPL, children ages 6 to 18 up to 133% FPL, pregnant women up to 198% FPL with 12 months postpartum coverage.
