The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP)

Administered by USDA Food and Nutrition Service · fns.usda.gov

USDA distributes commodity foods to states, which route them through food banks and pantries to low-income households. Same-day access in most communities — no application, no appointment, no EBT needed.

Eligibility requirements

  • Low income — state sets specific income guidelines (typically 185–200% FPL)
  • Walk-in access at most sites; some require proof of address or income
Insider tip

TEFAP is the federal program behind your local food bank. To find the nearest distribution site, use feedingamerica.org or call 2-1-1. Many pantries also offer additional non-TEFAP food — ask what else is available.
